Directed (Non-Original) Campaigns

This article will cover the following:

- Original vs. Directed (Non-Original) Campaigns

- Exceptions

- Original Campaigns by Media Type/Offer Contract

In CAKE, a Campaign is the relationship between an Affiliate and an Offer.
The 1st campaign created for an Affiliate and an Offer is considered "original" and unique.

If you were to create another Campaign for the same Affiliate and Offer, the system would give you a warning in the wizard.

Warning text: A campaign for this affiliate and offer already exists. The campaign created will be Directed (Non-Original).

This means that CAKE considers these 2 Campaigns identical.

  • The Affiliate's tracking links for these 2 Campaigns will be the same.
  • Without some type of exception, CAKE will not know when or why to track certain clicks and conversions under one Campaign rather than the other.

Original and Directed Campaigns will be listed by the "Directed" column in the campaign view on the Affiliate or Offer card.

Exceptions

On a Directed Campaign, CAKE asks for ALLOWED SubAffiliates or Creatives that should track under the Non-original instead of the Original Campaign. SubAffiliates and Creatives do not need to be blocked to be allowed.

Exceptions allows for you to dynamically assign different payouts for various criteria without having to have your Affiliate change any tracking links on their end. So if you had a Directed Campaign where the allowed SubAffiliate, "21966," received a lower payout, every time CAKE saw "&s1=21966," we would track those stats under the Directed Campaign.

If you want all subaffiliates to be able to run all creatives on either campaign, there are 2 settings that allow you to create multiple campaigns for the same Affiliate and Offer that are still considered original.

These two settings are Original Campaign by Offer Contract and Original Campaign by Media type.

*Enabling these settings applies the behaviors system-wide and cannot be adjusted on an Offer basis.

Original Campaign by Media Type

Original Campaign by Media Type

This is the simpler of the two settings. This updates the system to factor in a Campaign's chosen media type when considering whether the Campaign is original or Directed. This means that 2 Campaigns with 2 different media types will both be considered "Original" and track separately with NO exceptions.

With this setting enabled:

  • Tracking links are different by including a new parameter &m=MEDIA_TYPE which allows CAKE to know exactly which Campaign to track under.
  • The result of this is that every Campaign is now permanently tied to that media type and the Media Type option on the Campaign card is now greyed out and cannot be changed.
  • This also means that since both Campaigns are unique, we will not auto-place your Affiliate tracking pixel from the first Original Campaign the way that we do with Directed Campaigns. Since we consider the 2 Campaigns unrelated, the pixel (if the same) needs to be copied from the first Campaign.

Original Campaign by Offer Contract

Original Campaign by Offer Contract

This setting is more use-case specific. This updates the system to factor in the Offer Contract selected when considering whether a Campaign is original or not. This means that 2 campaigns associated to 2 different Offer Contracts will both be considered "original" and track separately with NO exceptions. Common use cases for this are if you want to send traffic simultaneously to 2 different landing pages that have no distinct targeting rules so they should be able to accept traffic from the same sources.

With this setting enabled:

  • Tracking links are different by including parameter &oc=OFFER_CONTRACT_ID which allows CAKE to know exactly which Campaign to track under.
  • The result of this is that every Campaign is now permanently tied to that Offer Contract so you will note that Offer Contract is now greyed out and cannot be changed.
  • Since both Campaigns are unique, we will not auto-place your Affiliate tracking pixel from the Original Campaign the way that we do with Non-original Campaigns. Since we consider the 2 Campaigns unrelated, the pixel (if the same) needs to be copied from your first Campaign.
