Click Pixels

What Is a Click Pixel?

What is a Click Pixel?

A click pixel is a Javascript or Image tag that generates a click within CAKE. When fired, CAKE will track a click just like when a unique link is clicked on.

Above are two different examples of a click pixel for a specific campaign. The formats differ (JavaScript vs. Image) but they both accomplish the same thing.

CAKE can identify which specific campaign the click pixel is tied to because the Affiliate ID is passed in the "a=" parameter and the creative is defined in the "c=" parameter.  These two values, just like a unique link, allow us to attribute the action to a specific campaign.

CAKE uses iFrame or JavaScript pixels to track conversions from its advertisers.  After all, a pixel is simply a piece of code that is placed on a page and functions as a tracking mechanism.

This is not any different with a click pixel, except this type of pixel can tell CAKE when a click has occurred as opposed to a conversion.

When Would I Need to Use a Click Pixel?

There are a few different reasons why you might want to use a click pixel, but the most common use case is for capturing organic traffic.

Typically in performance marketing you must distribute unique tracking links to your affiliates and consumers get redirected to the landing page after clicking that link. In some cases however, you may want to track consumers arriving to the landing page organically, or directly without clicking on an advertisement.

How Is It Implemented?

Click pixels live on the page that you wish to track a click.

If consumers are going to http://YourLandingPage.com, and you want to track organic traffic, you will want to place the click pixel directly on that page.

It functions within the same principals and rules as a normal unique link as well in regards to cookie days and duplicates. A consumer will only be tracked uniquely the first time they arrive at your page within the allotted cookie days.  Any return visits within the cookie days will be considered duplicates.

The image above is intended to illustrate that the Image pixel will live within the code of your page.

How to Generate Click Pixels

Unlike conversion pixels, click pixels are generated from the Affiliate main tab as opposed to the Offer card.

Remember, conversion pixels are intended for your advertiser, where click pixels are intended for your affiliates.

First hover over the Affiliates main tab, slide your cursor down to Pixels, then click Generate Click Pixel.

Once the wizard opens, select the affiliate, campaign and creative. These components will be used to build your click pixel.

Then click Next to display your click pixel.

Attribution

What if a consumer clicks on one of my affiliate's tracking links and redirects to a page that has a click pixel on it? Will CAKE track two clicks?

This depends on your offer's settings for first touch or last touch.

If your offer has first touch, CAKE will track the click pixel as duplicate and will only track the click from the tracking link as unique. If your offer has last touch, CAKE will always track the click pixel as unique and will attribute conversions to that click.

That being said, it is suggested that you DO NOT use last touch while tracking both unique links and a click pixel.
